Maryland was the seventh state to join the Union, but it still has a legacy of innovation. In 1811, the first major federal highway — the Historic National Road — started in Cumberland. In 1828, the nation’s first umbrella factory opened in Baltimore, and in 1840, two dentists established the world’s first dental school, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
