Churchill, Manitoba, a small village on the Hudson Bay, is known as the polar bear capital of the world.
They are the most studied and photographed polar bears on the planet. People travel to Churchill from all over the world to see the bears up close.
But a warming arctic is threatening the polar bears, who are pushed ashore as the ice melts. Their population is declining, and with it, the town's ecosystem — which depends on tourists and scientific investments — is suffering too.
Churchill native Dave Daley has run sled dogs for most of his life. He's passed on his love for his dogs to his son Wyatt, and is hoping his grandson Noah will take on the tradition as well.
Daley hopes the polar bears will remain in Churchill for generations to come. "The planet earth is a living being, and we're the ones treading on it. I think we really need to get a handle on it and start taking this seriously."
